IPL/LaseMD
At Rejuvenate! med spa, we perform photofacial treatments using the Sciton BBL™ intense pulsed light (IPL) device for Denver women and men. IPL photofacials significantly reverse damage to the skin caused by sun exposure and can improve the appearance of your face, hands, and other areas of the body.
BBL is just one of the facial rejuvenation treatments offered at Rejuvenate! med spa. You can also combine nonsurgical treatments with facial plastic surgery if desired. You can read more about IPL treatments on our Rejuvenate website.

How do Sciton BBL treatments work?
BBL delivers pulses of intense light to treatment areas, destroying vascular and pigmented lesions. Each light spectrum band used during BBL treatment has a wavelength that is ideal for treating different concerns, such as sun spots and prominent blood vessels. The light emitted by IPL is absorbed by the pigment in sun spots and blood in visible vessels, reducing their appearance. A series of 3 to 5 treatments every 4 weeks yields the best result.
How is an IPL treatment done?
Patients put on eyewear to protect their eyes from the bright light. The smooth glass surface of the IPL handpiece is gently placed on the skin and delivers light pulses to the skin through the glass. Patients may feel a slight sting, like the snapping of a small rubber band on their skin. Treatments are generally administered in a series of 4 to 6 sessions that provide excellent long-term results with minimal side effects. Each treatment takes anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the size of the area being treated.
How many IPL treatments are needed?
The number of treatments depends on the number of conditions you are treating and the severity of your individual problem. An average of 3 to 6 treatments may be recommended. You can return to work the same day and resume all of your regular activities. By dividing the program into several treatments, the procedure provides gradual improvement with very low risk and “no downtime.” Most people appreciate this approach. However, there are options for a more aggressive application if needed.
How does IPL compare with other treatments?
There are separate lasers that treat telangiectasia, broken capillaries, and benign brown pigments, and there are others that are used for resurfacing facial skin such as our Halo™ hybrid and Sciton Contour TRL™ fractional lasers. The Sciton BBL is the most powerful IPL treatment, providing long-term improvement of the complexion and texture without the slightest interruption in your busy lifestyle.
The LaseMD Procedure
The LaseMD skin resurfacing treatment is a gentler approach that requires little or no downtime and is ideal for patients with busy lives who want to refresh their appearance. The tradeoff is that it usually takes 2 or 3 treatment sessions to produce optimal results. Unlike the CO2Re procedure, which uses an ablative fractional laser, LaseMD is a non-ablative, 1927 nm Thulium laser that delivers heat below the skin without cutting it or causing it to bleed or blister. As the tissue heals, the micro-damaged skin sloughs off, revealing fresh skin. LaseMD can be used for all skin types.
What conditions can be treated with IPL?
Imperfection on the face or abnormalities can detract from your appearance and make you look older and less healthy. IPL™ technology helps create smoother-looking skin. After a series of treatments, you can see a significant reduction of unwanted pigmentation, tiny blood vessels (capillaries), sun damage, age spots, flushing, and blotchy-looking skin. It is an excellent treatment for rosacea and erythema that can cause social embarrassment. It is used on both men and women successfully without injuring surrounding healthy skin. IPL can be used on the neck, chest, arms, and hands. It is also used on the back and abdomen for age spots and hemangiomas.
Some patients choose to combine IPL with other treatments like laser hair removal or vein treatment in Denver in order to treat a wider range of conditions. If you are interested in undergoing multiple treatments, speak with one of our surgeons to discuss your options.
OUR EXCEPTIONAL PLASTIC SURGEONS
Our experienced plastic surgeons Dr. Steven Vath, Dr. Andrew Wolfe, Dr. Paul Steinwald, Dr. Matthew Freeman, and Dr. Teresa Cunningham lead our patient-centered practice with warmth, honesty, and respect.
How much does IPL cost?
The size and number of areas to be treated are decided upon in a consultation. Some patients are not eligible for this treatment; therefore, a complete medical history is taken and skin type is ascertained. There are certain medications and topical products that must be avoided when undergoing IPL treatment. IPL is contraindicated for dark skin. Once eligibility has been established, we can give you an estimate for the cost of each treatment or series of treatments.
How do I prepare for IPL treatments?
Your skin must be as close to its natural shade as possible prior to each treatment. If you are tan, the time needed to fade properly will depend on your skin type. Most individuals need at least 4 to 6 weeks fading time, depending upon tan depth. Self-tanning must be discontinued 2 weeks prior to each treatment. Failure to follow these guidelines can result in unwanted striping of the skin or burns.
You must protect your skin from the sun throughout the entire duration of the initial treatments and approximately 4 weeks after the final treatment in the series. Wear an SPF 30 or greater daily protection and a hat for extended exposure. We carry several brands and types of sunscreen products available at Rejuvenate!. Discontinue the use of all topical exfoliating agents such as retinol, glycolic and salicylic acids 3 to 4 days prior to each treatment. You would also avoid microdermabrasion, tissue fillers, and BOTOX® Cosmetic within 1 week of IPL treatments.
