Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) Before & After Case 499

This 24 year old male presented with concerns about persistent fullness of his chest area, which lent a somewhat embarrassing feminized effect.  Termed “gynecomastia”, this condition usually briefly happens during puberty (and is self-limited), but when it persists into adulthood, it can be due to hormonal imbalances (a relative excess of estrogen), several medications, or even excessive marijuana usage.  If there is a mass effect beneath the nipple, this often requires the involvement of a general surgeon to perform a biopsy of the area (which is usually covered by insurance).  If several of the aforementioned causes are ruled out, however, and the fullness is thought to be due to abnormal deposition of fatty tissues that don’t respond to diet or exercise, recontouring via liposuction is usually recommended.

This indeed was the case for this young gentleman, and ultra-sound assisted liposuction of these chest areas via 3 small incisions (and under light general anesthesia) yielded approximately 175 cc from the fuller right side, and 150cc from the left.  He recovered quite quickly, and was generally pleased with the more normalized/masculinized appearance that resulted (photographs are from approximately 3 months post-op, some residual swelling usually remains for up to 6 months).
