We’ve written quite a few blog posts about Mommy Makeover surgery—a suite of procedures designed to address the toll pregnancy and breastfeeding can take on a woman’s body. Recently, however, we’ve noticed an increase in the number of men coming into our plastic surgery practice in Denver for cosmetic rejuvenation. The trend has even earned its own nickname—the “Daddy Do-Over.”
A report released earlier this summer by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows that in 2018 men underwent more than 1.3 million cosmetic procedures, representing a nearly 30% increase since 2000. The increase shows no signs of slowing down, either, as social media and a competitive job market inspire men to look their best.
What Is a ‘Daddy Do-Over?’
As with a Mommy Makeover, the Daddy Do-Over can really be anything a patient wants it to be. A man’s body, of course, doesn’t go through the types of physical changes associated with pregnancy, but can gradually lose its contours even for guys who exercise and eat right.
The Daddy Do-Over can combine surgical and nonsurgical body contouring and facial procedures that are completed during a single surgery or appointment. Men worried about developing a “dad bod,” for example, may turn to liposuction to reduce fat around the midsection.
Eyelid surgery is another popular procedure among middle-aged men, and male breast reduction procedures have seen a significant uptick in popularity.
Who Are These Guys?
Colorado residents are some of the most active and healthiest in the U.S., so looking youthful and vital is something that’s valued by both men and women. As men age, however, their metabolism slows, muscle mass decreases, and the time spent mountain biking or hiking in the sun starts to show up on their faces.
There are a number of highly personal reasons a man might visit a cosmetic surgery practice. Some of the most common reasons include:
- Appearing youthful on social media: Just about everyone is active on one social media platform or another. Whether it’s sharing photos on Facebook with friends, or trying to connect on a dating app, our faces are front-and-center now more than ever. Getting rid of a double chin or crow’s feet can erase years from your appearance.
- Wanting to be confident in their bodies: Guys often like to go shirtless whether they’re paddle boarding or just doing yard work. Excess flab can make them self-conscious about their bodies, but nonsurgical or surgical body contouring can help.
- Getting an advantage in the workplace: Studies show that more attractive people—both men and women—tend to have an advantage when it comes to landing a job or getting a promotion at work. That may not sound fair, but you know what they say about life.
- Preventing wrinkles from developing: BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most common cosmetic injectable treatment performed in the world, but many people don’t realize that BOTOX can actually delay the onset of certain wrinkles. That’s because BOTOX works by limiting the movement of facial “expression” muscles whose movements result in wrinkles and fine lines.
