A Lifelong Dream of Becoming a Surgeon

Dr. Freeman was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His parents say he wanted to become a surgeon starting at age 5, frequently disassembling household appliances (much to his parents’ chagrin) and attempting to reassemble them.

His interest in plastic and reconstructive surgery grew in high school after he spent a summer in Guatemala on a plastic surgery mission trip. At the age of 16, he was assisting in cleft lip, cleft palate, and burn reconstruction procedures.

Educational Excellence

Dr. Freeman attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, completing a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and behavioral biology. He achieved the highest departmental honors in neuroscience and was inducted into two prestigious honor societies: Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest academic honor society in the United States, and Nu Rho Psi, dedicated to excellence in neuroscience studies.

While at Emory, Dr. Freeman had an opportunity to spend a semester abroad in Cape Town, South Africa. He also worked in a research lab investigating novel therapies for severe spinal cord injuries. His research efforts in this area continued during medical school, culminating in a presentation at the Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Dr. Freeman graduated in the top 5 of his class at Tulane University School of Medicine. His achievements garnered numerous accolades, including membership in the prestigious and highly selective Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and the C. Thorpe Ray Internal Medicine Excellence Award. Dr. Freeman shifted his research focus to reconstructive plastic surgery, particularly breast reconstruction after cancer.

Elite Training

Following graduation from medical school, Dr. Freeman was matched into the highly competitive 6-year integrated plastic surgery residency at New York City Mount Sinai. He completed rotations at five different Mount Sinai locations, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Bronx Veterans’ Affairs, and Elmhurst Hospital.

Dr. Freeman honed his skills under internationally renowned plastic surgeons. Some of his residency mentors included Dr. Hani Sbitany, Dr. Peter Taub, and Dr. Mark Sultan, who are well-regarded for their expertise in breast reconstruction, craniofacial surgery, and aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, respectively.

Following his residency, Dr. Freeman pursued additional training at the highest level. He completed a highly coveted cosmetic surgery fellowship in Austin, Texas, with Dr. Jennifer Walden, former president of The Aesthetic Society (formerly ASAPS). In addition to mastering the intricacies of aesthetic surgery, Dr. Freeman gained a newfound appreciation for the importance of the patient experience and the value of taking a holistic approach to aesthetic medicine.

Partners, Not Patients

This philosophy translates from the screen to the consultation room. Dr. Freeman knows that today’s patients do their homework: They have watched videos, listened to podcasts, and are active on social media.

Dr. Freeman believes that medical paternalism, where the doctor makes all the decisions, is antiquated. Instead, he is a champion for patient autonomy. He takes on a collaborative role, seeing his patients as partners on a journey to provide individualized, long-lasting, natural-looking, and consistent results.

In his view, he is there to listen, give expert advice, and support the patient in making their own informed decisions. His consultations are unhurried, thorough, and tailored to the patient’s unique needs and what can realistically achieve the best results. Patients respect his honesty and appreciate his warm, funny, and compassionate demeanor.
