Facelift surgery is performed in an operating room at the Center for Cosmetic Surgery, at the Denver West Surgery Center in Golden, Colorado. Only anesthesia providers credentialed and licensed in Colorado give anesthetic care for our patients.
Either general anesthesia or IV sedation with local anesthesia, depending on your situation, is used to achieve sedation and pain control during a facelift. You will be asleep either way, and awaken comfortably in our recovery room. General anesthesia and IV sedation are both extremely safe in healthy patients undergoing cosmetic surgery.
Incisions are made in the junctions between the face and ears and at the hairline. The skin of the face and neck is gently elevated and the deeper tissues are tightened to provide a longer lasting lift. Excessive skin is trimmed and then the incisions are precisely closed using a hair-sized suture so that no one will ever know that you have undergone facelift surgery.
The layer of tissue underneath your skin that is tightened to support your face is called the SMAS (superficial musculo-aponeurotic system). By tightening this SMAS layer, cheeks are raised reducing the nasolabial folds, jowls are elevated defining the jaw line, and the neck is lifted and tightened to give you an attractive neck angle again. In cases where the neck muscles are too loose and the neck contains excess fat, the muscles will be tightened and the excess fat will be removed. Then, with your facial structure supported from the inside, any excess skin is removed, tightening the face and neck and ridding you of loose skin and wrinkles.
Rhytidectomy does not treat the upper third of the face. Baggy eyelids, crow's feet, descended eyebrows or a wrinkled forehead can be addressed by combining your facelift with a brow lift or an eyelid procedure known as blepharoplasty. Other facial procedures often performed in conjunction with a facelift include ear surgery, chin augmentation and rhinoplasty. Your unique cosmetic goals will determine which single procedure or combination of procedures should be performed.
A facelift is appropriate for healthy people who do not smoke and wish to eliminate jowls, tighten their neck, define their jaw, reduce facial wrinkling and achieve a more youthful appearance. Reasonable expectations are essential, as no procedure can transform an adult with signs of age into a teenager. Depending on your bone structure and skin quality, the aesthetic benefits of a facelift generally last about ten years before a touchup procedure may be desired to treat selected areas.
